Through photography, Cihan Çakmak explores the relationship between identity, the body, and the gaze. Her carefully staged images blur the boundaries between reality and imagination, creating situations where vulnerability, resistance, and projection meet.
Using her own body as a space for experimentation, the artist questions cultural representations and the narratives associated with identities, particularly Kurdish identity. She takes familiar signs and images, shifts them, and reveals their contradictions.
Her photographs, which she describes as “state notes,” are provisional moments in which the artist, her surroundings, and the viewer’s gaze come together.
