In March 1982, ENTWERTER/ODER, an original graphic artists’ magazine, was launched in East Berlin. Its founders were  Uwe Warnke and Siegmar Körner. The magazine’s pages were designed by various renowned artists and are now on display from November 7, 2025, to April 12, 2026, in the exhibition ENTWERTER/ODER and the so-called “Magazine Nonsense” at the Willy-Brandt-Haus.

500 contributors from 15 countries contributed to a total of 130 issues of ENTWERTER/ODER. The exhibition presents works from all periods of the magazine’s creative life, with a focus on the 1980s. On display are graphics of all techniques, photographs, objects, manuscripts, and texts. ENTWERTER/ODER was an attempt to create a magazine that was independent of approval and control procedures, to operate independently, and to provide a platform for contributions from young authors and artists. Among those present were Harald Hauswald, Claus Bach, Kurt Buchwald, Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt, Peter Wawerzinek, and Strawalde.

A final issue of ENTWERTER/ODER will be published in November 2025 to mark the exhibition.

Everything happened without any commercial interest. We were young and prepared for trouble. We had nothing to lose. We did something without asking. That was precisely the political point.” (Uwe Warnke, Editor of ENTWERTER/ODER)
