In the exhibition “A Berlin Suitcase” (Ein Berliner Koffer), the Friends of the Willy-Brandt-Haus present the photographs of Fide Struck. Fide Struck was a worker-photographer, an office employee, and, at times, unemployed. He photographed in Berlin during the 1930s—with a casual air, a keen eye, and a sense of wit. In 1941, he packed some 3,000 negatives into a wooden suitcase, which survived the war and an odyssey through post-war Germany. In 2015, Struck’s youngest son, Thomas, opened the suitcase and began the process of cataloging the estate. The Willy-Brandt-Haus is now presenting a selection of the most compelling Berlin images from Fide Struck’s body of work.
Ulrich Tukur and Eva Mattes have recorded dramatic audio vignettes to accompany twelve of the photographs; these can be accessed via QR code. Coinciding with the exhibition, the photo book “Übersehen – Ein Berliner Koffer • Fotografien von Fide Struck 1928 – 1941” is being published by DISTANZ Verlag.
