With her portraits of artists working in contemporary international art, the internationally renowned photographer Angelika Platen is one of the most important representatives of a genre that allows us to encounter individuals who shape our society. The exhibition presents a selection of her work from the late 1960s to the present day, featuring some of her most significant pieces.

From February 20, 2026, the exhibition at halle267 will provide an important insight into the work of Angelika Platen and will also highlight links to artists who are connected to Brunswick and the region through the Academy of Fine Arts or through their artistic work. For example, the internationally renowned artists Marina Abramovic, John Armleder and Asta Gröting were lecturers at the University of Fine Arts, while Monica Bonvicini, for example, was represented with a work at the light trail in 2024. Daniel Buren created a floor work in 2005, the station underpass in Wolfsburg, and was also represented at the Light Parcours in 2000

Avant-garde movements and their representatives, who were often viewed critically at the time the portraits were created, are now among the world stars of contemporary art. Many of them were portrayed by Angelika Platen, and Angelika Platen still has an artistic and friendly relationship with some of them today. This is all the more true as the photographer was often involved in the creation of the respective scene and appears indirectly as well as sometimes directly in the picture.

Angelika Platen (*1942 in Heidelberg, lives in Berlin and the south of France) is one of the “grandes dames” of contemporary portrait photography with her portraits of international contemporary artists. Her extensive oeuvre, which now spans five decades, has been created in three phases since the end of the 1960s, with interruptions during which the artist lived in Paris, and has already been presented in several museum exhibitions.

This exhibition in halle267, which focuses on important individual portraits from the photographer’s work, and a parallel exhibition by Angelika Platen and the Finnish photographer Elina Brotherus in the Museum für Photographie Braunschweig, introduces Angelika Platen to Lower Saxony.
