Leaving Today – 9/11 New York

Holger Biermann

Blotto Books
2025

This publication is featured on PiE in conjunction with the exhibition Achtung Kultur! | Holger Biermann “Outside – 25 years of photography” in Bordeaux.

LEAVING TODAY is the first photo book by Berlin photographer Holger Biermann and features 68 photographs from New York on 128 pages, taken between 2001 and 2003. A large portion of the images, in the style of classic street photography and in black and white, depict the street life of the metropolis in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11th. Interspersed with color photographs of the events of the day itself, which act like flashbacks, are shown. Holger Biermann experienced September 11th, 2001, and its aftermath as an eyewitness. The photographs collected in LEAVING TODAY mark his start as a photographer. The images are preceded by a foreword by Freddy Langer, editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and an introductory text by the photographer.

Almost a quarter of a century after Biermann’s first photographs documenting the horror of September 11th, 2001, five years after he began work on this book, and two years after its first presentation, the illustrated book impresses with its undiminished cautionary relevance.“
