From 18th September to 18th October 2026, AFF Galerie in Berlin presents “recollected #2”, an exhibition featuring works by Jana Müller and Martina Sauter. The exhibition series “recollected” explores how memories are formed and how they are preserved and communicated through media such as photography. Photography has a particular relationship to the past: it captures moments, depicts places and people, and becomes a means of preserving both individual and collective memories. At the same time, context, selection, and personal associations play a central role in how images are viewed and interpreted.

“recollected #2” presents the work of two artists who approach photography, archives, and memory from different perspectives.

Jana Müller (*1977) shows an excerpt from her long-term project “Mock Rabbit”, which she has been researching since 2019. Drawing on the biography of her father, a former criminal investigator in the GDR, Müller examines criminal investigation in the German Democratic Republic. She has created an extensive archive around the project. For the exhibition, Müller presents a wall installation of photographs and objects, accompanied by a glossary that provides additional context. Her subjects range from archival materials and photographs of crime scene locations to everyday objects.

Martina Sauter (*1974) presents parts of her new work “Deep Water” alongside earlier works. Sauter uses excerpts from classic films as source material for her multilayered photographic works, combining them with her own images. She creates collages of fictional interior and exterior spaces in which subtle clues reveal the constructed nature of what we see. Places and objects mentioned in novels also become subjects in her photographs. For “Deep Water”, Sauter revisits her earlier working method, combining her own photographs of interior spaces with AI-generated imagery. Created in 2025, the new series is presented for the first time at AFF Galerie. The exhibition explores the role of photographic and archival images in the construction and reconstruction of memory, as well as the gaps that can emerge between documented history and personal experience.
