Lothar Wolleh had barely completed his studies with Otto Steinert when he traveled to Milan to study with Lucio Fontana. In the early 1960s, Wolleh worked for renowned advertising agencies; however, it was his collaboration with artists that proved formative for his work.
In 1963, an intensive dialogue began with the “Grande Maestro” of ZERO, Lucio Fontana. Until Fontana’s death in 1968, Wolleh visited his studio on Corso Monforte in Milan at least thirteen times.
During this period, Wolleh developed his concept of the photographic art book. The “Wolleh–Fontana Cassette ” marked his first project of this kind and proved to be a model for the editions and artists’ books of the following years. The portraits presented and the joint edition of 1966/67 document the dialogue with the “Grande Maestro” and mark a decisive step in the development of Wolleh’s photographic thinking and his understanding of the art book as an independent medium.
