“Where is home? I am here”

Everyone carries a sense of home, even if it drifts, even if it slips away. A beginning, a trace, a place we were born into – but whether it holds us is never certain. Where is home? Is not a new question. It has always been whispered to itself, quietly, in every corner of memory. This one is mine. A fragment, a note I keep writing to myself, never quite finished. Sometimes a memory. Sometimes a love letter. Sometimes the pause between breaths when I try to feel where I stand. My photography lives in that same space. It does not begin with answers, or even with intention. It begins instinctively, from memory, from intuition, from questioning my own. I photograph with my heart first. Understanding comes later. Meaning follows, slowly. The images ripen. They reveal themselves after – when I am ready to see what I have been holding. Home has not always been a safe place for me. It was confusing, warm and cold, loving and damaging, bitter and sweet, broken and fixed – all at once. I thought normal was an idea others carried. Now I see it differently: normal is safety, and safety is fleeting, hidden, always pursued in silence. I have never been homesick. The opposite actually. I was searching. Moving. Watching. Waiting. This work stems from that place. Where home was unstable, where nostalgia felt dishonest, where belonging appeared briefly and then vanished.

Felix B. Vollmann has been working as a photographer and filmmaker since 2012. He currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany. He has worked for and with governments in Europe (Germany), Africa (Burkina Faso, Comoros, Kenya, São Tomé and Príncipe, South Africa, Mozambique), Asia (China, Vietnam) and the Caribbean (Belize). His photography focuses on depicting people in the spaces that shape their everyday lives – in urban areas and on the streets. He combines portrait photography and street photography to document social landscapes.

The exhibition takes place at the Rock-Paper-Scissors Café & Co. at Aufbau Haus on Moritzplatz.
